Trump Plans Call with Taiwan Leader After China Talks on Arms Deal
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he intends to speak with Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te regarding a delayed arms package, following his recent talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing last week.
Trump did not provide details on how he would move forward with the proposed $14 billion weapons sale, but insisted the matter was under control, stating he had “the situation very well in hand,” according to reports.
“I'll speak to him. I speak to everybody. We have that situation very well in hand. We had a great meeting with President Xi. It was amazing,” Trump told reporters at Andrews Air Force Base.
He also added, “We'll work on that, the Taiwan problem,” referring to ongoing tensions surrounding the issue.
The arms package, which includes missiles and air defense interceptors, has reportedly been stalled for months at the US State Department. The matter was expected to feature in discussions during Trump’s two-day summit with Xi in Beijing, although there has been limited clarity on whether the talks influenced the status of the proposed deal.
