US Reportedly Halts Dollar Transfers to Iraq

(MENAFN) According to reports, the United States has suspended shipments of US dollars to Iraq and paused certain security cooperation programs with its military, citing concerns over Iran-linked armed groups.

The US Treasury Department reportedly stopped a planned air shipment carrying nearly $500 million in cash after expressing concerns about the potential diversion of funds to militia networks. The decision was described as part of broader efforts to limit the influence of Iran-aligned armed factions operating in the region.

Reports indicate this was the second postponed dollar transfer to Iraq’s central bank since tensions escalated following the conflict that began on Feb. 28. The move came after weeks of reported attacks by militia groups on US facilities in Iraq and neighboring countries.

In addition to financial restrictions, Washington has reportedly informed Baghdad that it is suspending support for certain counterterrorism and military training programs until attacks by armed groups stop and Iraqi authorities take action against them.

US officials described the suspension of cash shipments as temporary, though they did not specify conditions required for the resumption of transfers.

State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said Iraqi authorities’ failure to prevent attacks, along with alleged political and financial links between some state-associated actors and armed groups, is straining bilateral relations.

He added that the United States expects immediate action to dismantle Iran-aligned militia groups and stated that attacks on US interests will not be tolerated.
