Hezbollah Pushes Deepest Into Israel, Hitting Acre, Haifa

(MENAFN) Lebanese group Hezbollah dramatically widened the scope of its cross-border offensive on Sunday, pushing its attacks deep into northern Israel and reaching as far as Acre and Haifa, as the Israeli army simultaneously pressed ahead with a large-scale ground operation in southern Lebanon in open defiance of an active ceasefire.

The group claimed a strike on a helicopter landing pad in the Shlomi settlement, deploying a suicide drone against what it described as a gathering of Israeli soldiers. Hezbollah also said its fighters launched rockets targeting Israeli military infrastructure in Nahariya and the Krayot area north of Haifa, framing the assault as being "in defense of the Lebanese people" amid Tel Aviv's relentless offensive.

The Israeli army confirmed it had detected a booby-trapped drone and at least seven rockets fired from Lebanese territory, with warning sirens screaming across Kiryat Shmona, Kfar Giladi, Tel Hai, and Metula in northern Israel. The army said it successfully intercepted two rockets that crossed into Israeli airspace.

An Israeli radio station reported that sirens also wailed in Acre and the Krayot district in the Haifa region, noting that Hezbollah was continuing to expand the geographic reach of its strikes. The broadcaster said five rockets were fired from Lebanon toward Nahariya and surrounding communities, with most intercepted and no casualties recorded.

The exchange came hours after the Israeli army announced the launch of a "large-scale" offensive targeting the Beaufort Ridge and Wadi al-Salouqi (Saluki) area of southern Lebanon — an operation that underscores Tel Aviv's continued disregard for a ceasefire that took effect on April 17 and was extended by 45 days through indirect US-brokered negotiations.

The human toll of Israel's campaign continues to climb. Lebanon's Health Ministry reports that Israeli strikes since March 2 have killed more than 3,370 people and wounded upward of 10,000 others.
