Japan Stands For Diplomatic Solutions To Resolve Regional Crisis: Ambassador
Hisajima was addressing a virtual gathering at the“Diplomatic Dialogue Series” organised by Hamad Bin Khalifa University. He said Japan imports about 90% of its oil from this region and therefore, it is one of the countries most affected by this situation.“Japanese foreign minister had made a telephone phone call with His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani and appreciated Qatar's diplomatic efforts to mediate conflicts in the Middle East, including this current situation.
He also stated that Japan has strongly urged Iran to cease actions, and condemned Iran's actions on civilian facilities, and also actions that threatened the freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. He had expressed grave concern of retaliatory attacks and damages caused in the neighbouring countries, including Qatar.
He also noted that the Japanese foreign minister had expressed his country's intention to co-ordinate and co-operate with Qatar on various matters, including the early settlement of the situation, and securing the safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
The envoy said that Japan had contacted Iran several times suggesting de-escalation of the situation.“We had explained Japan's position and urged Iran particularly for the safe passage of vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. Japan and Iran have had a very long relationship, and reflecting on them, our government has had a direct contact with Iran after this situation took place and repeatedly reiterated our positions to Iranian counterparts,” he explained.
Hisajima stated that Japan had also conveyed to the Iranian minister about Japan's position that Iran's development of nuclear weapons can not be allowed. He highlighted Japan's effort to co-ordinate with the international community to make all necessary diplomatic efforts to resolve issues surrounding Iran, including nuclear issues.
“And Japan is continuing to engage in various diplomatic activities in order to de-escalate the situation and ensure the passage of safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. Japan's diplomatic efforts also include the joint statement on the Strait of Hormuz, which was issued on March 19. It was a statement jointly by 38 countries so far, an initiative taken by the United Kingdom and other countries,” he added.
