Iran, Türkiye Hold Talks on Latest Regional Developments

(MENAFN) Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan spoke by phone Wednesday, holding consultations on the fast-moving diplomatic landscape that has emerged in the wake of the U.S.-Iran ceasefire agreement, Iranian media reported.

The call centered on the latest regional developments following the truce that has now taken effect — part of a broader push by regional powers to consolidate the fragile halt in hostilities and translate it into substantive negotiations.

The ceasefire was announced Tuesday by U.S. President Donald Trump, who said he had agreed to "suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks," a move he stressed was "subject to" Iran agreeing to the complete, immediate and safe reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Araghchi moved quickly to clarify Tehran's position on the critical waterway, stating that Iran would guarantee safe passage through the strait during the two-week window — coordinating directly with its armed forces to do so. He added that Tehran would stand down its "defensive operations" provided that strikes against Iran cease in parallel.

Attention is now turning to Islamabad, where Iran's Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf is expected to lead Tehran's negotiating delegation in talks with U.S. Vice President JD Vance — marking the first direct high-level engagement between the two sides since the ceasefire took hold.

The diplomatic momentum has been building steadily, with the foreign ministers of Pakistan, Iran, Egypt, and Türkiye all intensifying mediation efforts to bring Washington and Tehran back to the same table.
