Iran Reacts to Embassy Flag Incident in UK

(MENAFN) Iran has lodged a protest with the United Kingdom after its national flag was torn down from the embassy in London, according to several government-linked outlets.

The incident took place on Saturday when members of the Iranian diaspora gathered outside the embassy in Kensington to express solidarity with demonstrations inside Iran.

During the rally, one activist scaled the wall, removed the Islamic Republic’s flag, and replaced it with Iran’s pre-1979 royal banner, which depicts a lion and Sun.

This symbol is frequently used by Iranians abroad to oppose the current government. The embassy later reinstated the official flag, posting on X: “Iran’s flag is flying high.”

A semi-official reported that the British ambassador was summoned after “the Iranian Embassy in London was disrespected by displacing the Iranian flag.”

Alireza Yousefi, director-general for Western Europe at Iran’s Foreign Ministry, delivered a “strong protest” to the UK representative.

However, the UK Foreign Office disputed that Ambassador Hugo Shorter had been formally summoned, with a news agency citing sources who described the encounter as merely “a meeting” at the Foreign Ministry.

Meanwhile, London police confirmed arrests were made for aggravated trespass and assault on an emergency worker in connection with the incident.
