Israel’s move at Hebron Mosque draws strong Jordanian criticism
(MENAFN) Jordan on Friday denounced Israel’s decision to strip the Hebron Municipality of its planning and construction authority over the Ibrahimi Mosque compound, while unilaterally approving a project to roof its courtyard. The action was described as a blatant violation of international law and the historic and legal status of the site.
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Fuad Majali stated that Jordan strongly opposes Israel’s ongoing illegal unilateral measures in the occupied West Bank, highlighting the recent actions targeting the Ibrahimi Mosque, according to a ministry release.
He emphasized that these steps clearly breach international law and international humanitarian law, including the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict.
Majali also noted that the measures violate relevant UN resolutions, particularly UNESCO’s 2017 decision to list the Old City of Hebron and the Ibrahimi Mosque as World Heritage in Danger.
He called on the international community to fulfill its legal and moral obligations, pressuring Israel, as the occupying power, to halt its illegal actions in Palestinian territories, safeguard the mosque’s cultural and religious heritage, and protect its outstanding universal value, which he said is increasingly at risk from Israeli policies.
Majali reaffirmed that lasting security and a just, comprehensive peace cannot be achieved without respecting the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, including self-determination and the creation of an independent, sovereign state within the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
