Gulf countries support Yemen dialogue to resolve southern crisis

(MENAFN) Gulf countries on Saturday voiced support for Yemen’s efforts to resolve tensions in the south through dialogue, welcoming the planned Saudi-hosted conference initiated by Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council.

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry praised the Yemeni leadership for pursuing dialogue and called on all southern groups to participate constructively, emphasizing that solutions should reflect the interests of the Yemeni people. It also stressed the importance of adhering to the outcomes of the National Dialogue Conference as a framework for an inclusive political settlement that preserves Yemen’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. Qatar warned that unilateral actions taken without consultation risk undermining stability and escalating the conflict.

Kuwait welcomed the conference initiative by Presidential Council chief Rashad al-Alimi and praised Saudi Arabia for hosting the talks, calling on all parties to pursue de-escalation. Bahrain’s Foreign Ministry expressed deep concern over rising tensions in Yemen, urging the population to prioritize wisdom, halt escalation, and protect the country’s sovereignty and regional stability.

The call for dialogue follows a surge in hostilities since early December, when Southern Transitional Council (STC) forces seized control of Hadhramaut and Al-Mahra—provinces that together account for nearly half of Yemen’s territory and border Saudi Arabia. On Friday, STC leader Aidrous al-Zubaidi announced a two-year “transitional phase,” including talks with northern Yemeni parties and a proposed referendum on the south’s future.

The developments come amid a rift between Saudi Arabia and the UAE, with Riyadh accusing Abu Dhabi of pressuring the STC to carry out military operations along the southern border—a claim denied by the UAE. While the STC calls for southern secession citing political and economic marginalization, Yemen’s government reaffirms its commitment to national unity.
