Palestine’s FM Says Peace with Israel Impossible Amid Rights Violations

(MENAFN) The foreign minister of Palestine said on Sunday that achieving peace with Israel remains unattainable as long as Palestinian rights continue to be breached, emphasizing the need to uphold international law and end unilateral actions.

Speaking to a news agency during the Munich Security Conference in Munich, Varsen Aghabekian Shaheen stated, "peace with Israel under conditions of constant violation of Palestinian rights is not possible."

She said that Israeli steps taken independently in occupied areas, including the West Bank and East Jerusalem, such as expanding and retroactively approving settlements considered illegal under international law, erode the chances of reaching a negotiated agreement.

"Everything that Israel is undertaking unilaterally in occupied territory should be considered null and void," she said, stressing annexation "is in violation of international law, and it is a crime that needs to be stopped."

Addressing the ceasefire process in Gaza, Shaheen explained that moving forward to the next phase hinges on the full execution of earlier commitments.

“We would like to go into phase two, but we need to ensure that phase one obligations are undertaken," she said. She noted that the initial phase concluded following an exchange of Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners, while the second phase is expected to focus on rebuilding the enclave after two years of destruction.

"We still see that we don't have a complete ceasefire. We have a partial ceasefire. The humanitarian assistance is not getting in to the extent that is needed. The Rafah border crossing is partially opened," she added, emphasizing that additional steps are necessary to ensure a stable and effective transition.
