Trump Tells Netanyahu US Would Support Strikes on Iran if Talks Fail
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump reportedly told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a December meeting that the United States would support Israeli military action targeting Iran’s ballistic missile program if diplomatic talks with Tehran fail.
According to reports, conversations in Washington have evolved from questioning whether Israel might carry out such a strike to examining how the US could assist operationally and diplomatically. Sources familiar with the discussions indicated that planning has focused on the practical mechanisms that would enable such an operation.
Among the main considerations are providing aerial refueling to extend the range of Israeli aircraft and navigating the complicated issue of securing overflight clearance from neighboring countries. However, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates have all stated they would not allow their airspace to be used for strikes against Iran.
The report comes as Washington increases its military footprint in the region. The US has deployed the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group and is preparing to send the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier as well.
Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts continue. A second round of talks between Iranian and American officials is set to take place Tuesday in Geneva, with Oman acting as mediator.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Sunday that Trump "prefers diplomacy" in dealing with Iran. He added that US representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are traveling for "important meetings."
"We'll see how that comes out," Rubio added.
