Palestinians Gets Displaced Following Home Demolitions in West Bank
(MENAFN) Twenty-one Palestinians were forced from their home on Sunday after Israeli forces tore down a family residence in the town of Jiyus, located north of Qalqilya in the occupied West Bank, according to a Palestinian advocacy group.
The Bedouin rights organization Al-Baydar reported that the 160-square-meter home was demolished on the grounds that it lacked an official building permit. The group said the family — which includes children and elderly individuals — was left without housing as a result of the action.
Israeli regulations restrict construction and land development in Area C of the West Bank unless permits are obtained, a process Palestinians describe as “nearly impossible” to navigate.
Data released by the Colonization and Wall Resistance Commission indicated that Israeli authorities conducted 59 demolition operations in January alone, affecting 126 Palestinian-owned structures, including 77 occupied homes.
The commission also documented 40 additional demolition orders, the majority issued in the city of Hebron.
In a separate move on Sunday, the Israeli government approved a plan to classify extensive tracts of land in the occupied West Bank as “state property” — the first such measure since the territory came under Israeli control in 1967.
Israel has stepped up its activities across the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, following the launch of its military offensive in Gaza on Oct. 8, 2023. Palestinians regard the escalation — encompassing fatalities, detentions, displacement, and settlement growth — as part of a broader push toward formal annexation.
According to Palestinian figures, at least 1,112 people have been killed in the West Bank during this period, roughly 11,500 have been injured, and more than 21,000 have been arrested.
In July of last year, the International Court of Justice issued a landmark advisory opinion declaring Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories unlawful and urging the removal of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
