U.S. Threatens Countermeasures Against EU Over Tech Regulations

(MENAFN) The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) Tuesday issued stark warnings of potential countermeasures against the EU regarding what Washington labels the bloc's contentious regulations targeting service providers.

"If the EU and EU Member States insist on continuing to restrict, limit, and deter the competitiveness of U.S. service providers through discriminatory means, the United States will have no choice but to begin using every tool at its disposal to counter these unreasonable measures," the USTR declared in a statement posted to social platform X.

According to the USTR, prospective retaliatory actions might encompass levying charges or implementing limitations on foreign services. The agency further cautioned it could deploy comparable tactics against other nations adopting what it characterized as an EU-style regulatory framework in this sector.

The USTR claimed the EU and select member states have executed a persistent campaign of discriminatory and harassing litigation, taxation, penalties, and mandates singling out American service providers.

"The United States has raised concerns with the EU for years on these matters without meaningful engagement or basic acknowledgement of U.S. concerns," the USTR added.

The USTR also emphasized EU service providers have functioned without restriction in America for decades, capitalizing on access to the American marketplace and consumer base, while identifying multiple European technology behemoths with extensive operations domestically.

The recent statements mirror escalating exasperation among American officials regarding the EU's strengthening technology oversight and legal proceedings targeting American tech titans.

The European Commission has lately launched two antitrust probes into American tech powerhouses Google and Meta, and penalized Elon Musk's platform X 120 million euros (approximately 140 million U.S. dollars) in its inaugural non-compliance ruling under the Digital Services Act.
