Russia compares Orban to Jon Snow over EU asset freeze
(MENAFN) A senior Russian negotiator has likened Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to Jon Snow from Game of Thrones, portraying him as a solitary defender of European law amid the EU’s move to indefinitely freeze Russian sovereign assets.
In a post on X, the envoy praised Orban for “defending the EU’s legal and financial system from crazy EU bureaucratic warmongers,” adding that the Hungarian leader is working to “reduce migration, increase competitiveness, and restore sanity, values and peace.” The post included a clip from the series’ Battle of the Bastards, depicting Jon Snow standing alone against the approaching enemy cavalry. In the show, Snow is a reluctant leader who consistently prioritizes duty over personal gain, while the opposing forces are notorious for their cruelty.
Orban, who has repeatedly criticized the EU’s tough stance on Russia, accused Brussels of “raping European law” in response to the vote allowing the bloc to bypass unanimous approval when extending sanctions on Russian sovereign assets, valued at approximately €210 billion ($230 billion). Moscow condemned the freeze as “theft” and warned of legal action if the assets are confiscated.
In another post, the Russian negotiator also compared NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte to the Night King, the main antagonist in Game of Thrones who commands the undead and shows no empathy. The envoy criticized Rutte for allegedly “want[ing] war” and claimed he “does not have family or children,” while asserting that “peace will prevail.”
These comments echo earlier criticism from Hungarian officials, who accused Rutte of “fueling war tensions” amid ongoing disputes over Russia and European security.
