UN Representative Urges Global Action Amid Gaza Genocide

(MENAFN) Türkiye’s representative to the United Nations, Gulsah Cumurcu Kader, cautioned on Tuesday that the global community is observing "grave atrocities that may amount to genocide." She emphasized that the current conditions in the Gaza Strip should act as a powerful reminder of the urgent necessity for preventative measures.

Speaking at a high-level UN session commemorating the 10th anniversary of the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of Genocide, Kader remarked, "While the pledge of 'never again' made after the Holocaust remains embedded in our collective conscience, the international community today continues to witness grave atrocities that may amount to genocide."

She described Gaza as "a somber reminder and a wake-up call," highlighting the importance of ensuring that "the tragic lessons of the past guide our efforts."

Kader further stressed the significance of adhering to international law in all actions, pointing out that the 1948 Genocide Convention "clearly defines the narrow legal term of genocide" and emphasizing that "a competent court must ascertain that this crime has been committed."

She called on nations to refrain from exploiting the term for political ends and cautioned that the world is seeing increasing "racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, discrimination and mere intolerance towards the other."

"There should be no impunity for the gross violations of international law such as the ones we witnessed in Gaza," Kader stated, underlining that accountability is essential for prevention.
