EU: Re-Imposition Of Sanctions On Iran Not End Of Diplomacy

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, Sept 28 (KUNA) -- EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas said on Sunday that the re-imposition of nuclear-related sanctions and restrictions on Iran "must not be the end of diplomacy."
In a statement, Kallas stressed that the Iranian nuclear file remains a fundamental challenge to regional and international security, while noting at the same time, "a sustainable solution to this issue can only be achieved through negotiation and diplomacy."
The statement, issued on behalf of the EU, said that this decision came following the activation of the snapback mechanism by France, Germany and the United Kingdom, which had notified the UN Security Council on August 28 of Iran's significant non-compliance with its commitments under the nuclear deal.
She added that, in its role as Coordinator of the Joint Commission of the nuclear agreement, the EU, together with the three European countries and other international partners, had engaged in intensive diplomatic contacts with Iran during the 30-day period set by the mechanism, but these efforts did not succeed in creating the necessary conditions to extend the validity of UN Security Council Resolution 2231.
Kallas affirmed that the EU would now proceed to implement the re-imposition of all previously lifted UN and EU nuclear-related sanctions without delay.
She pointed out that, over the past ten years, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA) and UN Security Council Resolution 2231 had provided a framework to ensure that Iran's nuclear program remained exclusively peaceful, while also establishing an effective monitoring and verification mechanism through the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
The EU official urged Iran to fully resume its cooperation with the IAEA immediately, in line with its legal obligations under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and its binding Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement.
It is noteworthy that the UN Security Council today re-imposed all UN nuclear-related sanctions and restrictions against Iran, which has previously been terminated under Resolution 2231 that endorsed the JCPoA (nuclear agreement). (end)
