Syria Hails U.S. House Vote as Turning Point in Easing Sanctions

(MENAFN) Syria on Thursday praised a decision by the U.S. House of Representatives to rescind the Caesar Act sanctions, describing it as a direct consequence of months of “constructive diplomatic engagement” between Damascus and Washington.

According to a statement from the Foreign Ministry, the move — approved within the National Defense Authorization Act — represents a “pivotal moment” for rebuilding confidence and charting a fresh course for collaboration in line with the vision of President Ahmad al-Sharaa.

The ministry emphasized that eliminating the sanctions would open the door to a wider economic revival and reinstate opportunities “denied to the Syrian people for years due to imposed sanctions.”

The decision, coupled with an anticipated Senate vote next week, is expected to enhance the flow of crucial commodities and medical supplies, while fostering conditions necessary for reconstruction efforts and reinvigorating the national economy.

Syria, the statement noted, “will continue working diligently to lift the remaining restrictions in service of the Syrian people.”

The ministry also conveyed gratitude to all parties that backed the initiative and expressed optimism that upcoming votes will finalize the dismantling of the sanctions framework and “open new horizons of cooperation” between Syria and the U.S.

On Wednesday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), a $901 billion bill defining the Pentagon’s strategic policies. Within its 3,086 pages are major allocations, including $800 million for Ukraine — $400 million annually over the next two years — through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, along with the repeal of the Caesar sanctions on Syria originally imposed under the rule of Bashar al-Assad.
