Namibia Police-Prison Van Collision Claims 16 Lives


(MENAFN) Two additional officers succumbed to injuries Sunday, escalating the death toll from Namibia's devastating collision between a police van and correctional service bus to 16 fatalities.

Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety, and Security Minister Lucia Iipumbu confirmed that one police officer and one correctional officer died at a Mariental hospital, while three survivors continue receiving medical treatment.

The catastrophic head-on crash occurred Saturday near Mariental, located 269 kilometers south of capital Windhoek. Initial reports indicated 14 deaths from the collision involving 19 total passengers across both government vehicles.

The police van transported six passengers, five officers, and one civilian, while the correctional service bus carried 13 officers, Iipumbu detailed.

The minister issued urgent appeals for public restraint regarding graphic content from the accident site.
