Turkey takes initiative to build novel shelters to safeguard civilians

(MENAFN) The Turkish government has announced a nationwide initiative to construct modern shelters in every province to safeguard civilians in case of war or natural disasters, according to reports.

Construction has already begun in several cities, particularly in the capital, Ankara. The shelters are being designed as durable, easily accessible structures for use during emergencies.

The cabinet approved the program for all 81 provinces after a study by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change revealed a shortage of adequate shelter infrastructure and noted that existing facilities fail to meet safety standards.

Currently, Turkey’s Shelter Regulation, in effect since 1987, requires buildings of a certain size to include shelters. However, the rule has largely been ignored, with many designated areas in apartment complexes repurposed as parking or storage spaces.
