Türkiye Applauds DR Congo, M23 rebels Deal
(MENAFN) On Sunday, Türkiye welcomed a significant agreement facilitated by Qatar, which was officially signed in Doha between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and a coalition of insurgents including M23, known collectively as AFC/M23.
Türkiye described the development as a crucial milestone in efforts to establish peace and security across the region.
According to a statement released by the Foreign Ministry, “This Declaration constitutes an important step toward a peaceful and lasting solution to the conflict in the east of the DRC.”
The ministry emphasized its approval of the collaborative and positive roles played by all parties engaged in the process, highlighting the efforts of Qatar, the East African Community, and the Southern African Development Community in particular.
Türkiye reaffirmed its continued commitment to encouraging initiatives that foster harmony, protection, and stability throughout the African continent.
The declaration outlining the agreement was endorsed on Saturday by delegates representing both sides, concluding a period marked by intensive diplomatic efforts.
This recent development follows a prior peace pact signed between Congo and Rwanda on June 27 in Washington.
That accord has revived optimism for ending the prolonged hostilities affecting eastern parts of Congo.
Congo and several Western governments have long accused Rwanda of providing assistance to the M23 rebel group, which reemerged in 2021—a claim that Rwanda has persistently refuted.
