Fidan is set to partake in informal Cyprus meeting in NY
(MENAFN) Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is set to participate in an informal meeting on Cyprus at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Wednesday. The gathering will bring together leaders from the divided island as well as representatives from the guarantor powers.
According to official Turkish sources, the country aims for the meeting to promote a spirit of cooperation between the two communities on Cyprus and to support the development of positive neighborly relations between the two states on the island.
Joining Fidan at the two-day event will be UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Ersin Tatar, Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides, Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis, and the UK’s Minister of State for Europe, North America, and Overseas Territories, Stephen Doughty.
Fidan previously took part in a similar informal meeting in Geneva in March. These informal talks are not a resumption of past negotiation processes nor the start of new formal negotiations.
During the Geneva meeting, convened at Guterres’ request, discussions centered on practical cooperation issues such as crossing points, mine clearance, and environmental matters. While progress was made on some topics, certain efforts stalled, largely due to the Greek Cypriot side’s position.
To push the process forward, Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar, the UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy on Cyprus, was reappointed in May. Since then, she has conducted multiple visits and held consultations with leaders and officials on Cyprus as well as in Türkiye, Greece, the UK, and the EU.
