Pope Leo, Italy’s Meloni Hold Key Talks on Gaza, Ukraine
(MENAFN) Pope Leo XIV and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni addressed key global crises, including the escalating humanitarian disaster in Gaza and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, during their inaugural face-to-face meeting on Wednesday.
The Pontiff welcomed Meloni for a private audience at the Apostolic Palace, according to media. The meeting occurred shortly after Meloni's return from the NATO Summit in The Hague.
In addition to the private audience with the Pope, Meloni also held discussions with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican's Secretary of State, and Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, the Vatican’s Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations.
A Vatican statement emphasized the cordial nature of the talks, underscoring the "good existing relations between the Holy See and Italy," and highlighted the shared commitment to fostering peace in Ukraine and the Middle East. Humanitarian aid to Gaza was also a key point of focus during the discussions.
The statement also noted that the dialogue extended to various bilateral issues and matters of significance to both the Church and Italian society.
