Latin American Bloc denounces US increasing economic pressure on Cuba

(MENAFN) The Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America-People’s Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP) issued a strong condemnation on Tuesday of the United States’ policy aimed at increasing economic pressure and blockade against Cuba.

In an official statement, the alliance criticized Washington’s move to reactivate and update Presidential Memorandum No. 5, originally introduced under the Trump administration, which serves to reinforce the U.S. embargo on Cuba.

The bloc described the decision as a sign of escalated U.S. efforts to push for regime change and undermine vital Cuban sectors such as tourism, healthcare, migration, cultural and academic exchanges, and technology access.

It stated that the true aim of the U.S. government is to dominate Cuba and dictate its future, while reaffirming steadfast solidarity with the Cuban people and government in their defense of sovereignty, freedom, and self-determination.

The member countries also reiterated their dedication to principles of peace, security, diplomacy, respect for non-interference, and the right of peoples to determine their own path.

ALBA-TCP includes Antigua and Barbuda, Bolivia, Cuba, Dominica, Grenada, Nicaragua, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Lucia, and Venezuela. This intergovernmental group focuses on the social, political, and economic integration of Latin American and Caribbean nations.
