Ukrainian PM Urges Increased Global Pressure on Russia

(MENAFN) Ukraine’s Prime Minister, Denys Shmyhal, met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Tuesday to thank the United Nations for its support of humanitarian efforts and the Black Sea Grain Initiative, while also urging increased global pressure on Russia.

During their discussion, Shmyhal condemned Russia’s continued attacks on civilians and reiterated that Moscow had no intention of pursuing peace talks. "Russia is not willing to negotiate, so we must force it to peace through systematic international pressure, toughening sanctions and providing Ukraine with the necessary weapons to defend itself," he stated on X.

Shmyhal also emphasized the urgent need for more international support in Ukraine’s demining efforts. "Special emphasis was placed on demining. We need additional assistance from our partners," he remarked.

The Prime Minister expressed gratitude to Guterres for his personal involvement in the Black Sea Grain Initiative, which has been suspended since Russia withdrew from the deal in 2023.
Shmyhal acknowledged Guterres’ understanding of Ukraine’s pressing needs amid the ongoing conflict.

The Black Sea Grain Initiative, established in 2022 by Türkiye and the UN, was designed to address the global food crisis by facilitating safe grain exports from Ukraine’s ports. However, after Russia’s exit from the agreement, Kyiv and international stakeholders have continued to call for alternative solutions and the revival of the deal.
