UN Chief Warns of "Dangerous Escalation" as U.S. Strikes Iran
(MENAFN) On Saturday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed deep concern following the United States’ recent military strikes targeting Iran, warning of a "dangerous escalation" in an already volatile region.
Guterres took to X to say, "I am gravely alarmed by the use of force by the United States against Iran today. This is a dangerous escalation in a region already on the edge – and a direct threat to international peace and security."
These comments followed US President Donald Trump’s announcement that American forces had carried out "very successful" airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities, raising apprehension about the potential for a broader conflict.
Urging all UN member countries to work toward reducing tensions and to honor their commitments under the UN Charter and international law, Guterres highlighted, "There is a growing risk that this conflict could rapidly get out of control – with catastrophic consequences for civilians, the region, and the world."
He emphasized that a military approach offers no solution, stressing that diplomacy remains the only viable route forward.
"The only hope is peace," Guterres concluded.
