Amman, June 17 (Petra) -- Minister of Health Firas Hawari conducted a series of high-level bilateral meetings in Algiers aimed at strengthening health sector cooperation and expanding partnerships in the pharmaceutical industry, as part of his official visit to Algeria.
According to a ministry statement, Hawari met on Monday with Algeria's Minister of Labour, Employment, and Social Security, Faisal Ben Taleb, in the presence of Jordan's ambassador to Algeria, Shaker Atallah Al-Amoush.
The discussions centered on enhancing cooperation in priority health areas, with both sides emphasizing the value of building on the longstanding relations to develop strategic partnerships that elevate healthcare services and promote regional integration.
Hawari expressed Jordan's appreciation for the historic ties with Algeria and highlighted the Kingdom's efforts, under the leadership of King Abdullah II, to position Jordan as a leading destination for medical tourism.
He recalled that the King's visit to Algeria in December 2022 was a milestone that revitalized direct flights between Amman and Algiers and led to agreements allowing Algerian patients to receive treatment in Jordanian private hospitals.
The ministers also explored opportunities for joint pharmaceutical manufacturing and stressed the importance of sharing technical and medical expertise to enhance both countries' ability to tackle growing health challenges.
Minister Ben Taleb noted Algeria's significant advancements in healthcare and stressed the importance of activating bilateral labor agreements by proposing an executive program for Jordanian experts to review.
The meetings also served to explore ways to implement signed health agreements more effectively and identify new areas of collaboration to further strengthen the partnership between Jordan and Algeria in healthcare, benefiting both peoples.
During the visit, Hawari, accompanied by the Jordanian ambassador and a delegation of investors and pharmaceutical experts, met with the Acting Secretary-General of Algeria's Ministry of Pharmaceutical Industry, Khaled Dahan.
The focus was on the current trade relations in pharmaceuticals and highlighting the growing presence of Jordanian investment in Algeria, where three Jordanian pharmaceutical companies are now active.
Hawari expressed pride in the strong ties within the pharmaceutical sector and emphasized Jordan's commitment to expanding cooperation, especially in innovative drug development and production technology. He also voiced Jordan's interest in importing pharmaceutical raw materials from Algeria, signaling a move toward deeper industrial integration.
The Algerian side praised Jordanian investors' pivotal role, describing the cooperation as a successful model amid Algeria's efforts to localize raw material production and reduce manufacturing costs.
The two countries also discussed enhancing institutional cooperation between Jordan's Food and Drug Administration and Algeria's National Agency for Pharmaceutical Products to streamline drug registration and facilitate market access, supporting resilient health and economic systems able to meet regional and international demands.
These meetings reflect Jordan's broader commitment to advancing Arab cooperation in healthcare and fostering partnerships that bring tangible benefits to the region while strengthening collective resilience against future health and pharmaceutical challenges.
