Adani Group Launches India's First Hydrogen-Powered Truck For Mining Logistics In Chhattisgarh
The innovative vehicle was officially launched by Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai in Raipur and will be deployed to transport coal from the Gare Pelma III Block to the state's power generation facility.
The hydrogen-fueled truck represents a significant advancement in sustainable heavy transportation, featuring a substantial cargo capacity of up to 40 tonnes while delivering an operational range of 200 kilometers on a single hydrogen refill.
The vehicle's design incorporates three hydrogen storage tanks, enabling it to match conventional diesel-powered heavy-duty vehicles in both load-carrying capacity and operational range, while simultaneously offering dramatic reductions in harmful emissions.
Environmental benefits constitute a primary advantage of this technology, as hydrogen fuel cell vehicles produce only water vapor and warm air as byproducts, in stark contrast to traditional diesel trucks that emit carbon dioxide and various pollutants.
This positions hydrogen-powered vehicles among the cleanest alternatives currently available in the commercial transportation sector.
The operational mechanism of hydrogen fuel cells involves a sophisticated electrochemical process.
When hydrogen enters the fuel cell system, it undergoes separation into protons and electrons. While protons pass through a specialised membrane, electrons are channeled through an electrical circuit, generating electricity. This electrical power drives the vehicle's electric motor, with water being the sole emission product.
While Adani's initiative marks the first application of hydrogen power in Indian mining logistics, the technology has been gaining substantial momentum in global markets.
Several international automotive manufacturers have already introduced hydrogen-powered passenger vehicles, including Toyota with its Mirai model and Hyundai with the Nexo, demonstrating the broadening industry adoption of hydrogen fuel cell technology.
