Council President Says EU Prioritizes Expansion of Strategic Peace
(MENAFN) European Council President Antonio Costa reaffirmed on Monday that expanding the European Union remains a top political objective, emphasizing that integration into the bloc is the "best way" to guarantee long-term peace and economic development in the Western Balkans.
Speaking alongside Albanian Premier Edi Rama during a press briefing in Brussels, Costa described the inclusion of Western Balkan nations as a fundamental goal for the EU.
He praised Albania’s advancements on its journey toward EU membership and confirmed the initiation of a new phase in the accession talks.
Costa also mentioned plans to open further chapters in the negotiations later this year.
According to Costa, "It (enlargement) is our real commitment with the region, and it is the most important geopolitical investment -- for peace, for prosperity, and for stability on our continent."
He stressed that this move is vital not only for Albania but for all of Europe, reiterating that the most effective path to ensuring peace and development in the region lies in EU membership.
To reinforce this agenda, Costa revealed his intention to visit each of the six Western Balkan countries in May “to enhance our cooperation and our common efforts to have a good result in this accession process.”
This diplomatic tour is aimed at strengthening collaboration and maintaining momentum in the integration process.
He concluded by highlighting the urgency of unity among European nations: "More than ever, it is very important that we are all together, united, because united we are stronger, and the world needs a stronger Europe.”
Premier Edi Rama expressed satisfaction over the discussion of Albania’s EU trajectory and looked ahead to the upcoming European Political Community summit, scheduled to take place in Tirana on May 16.
