Kremlin announces Moscow supports ceasefire despite Kiev’s violations

(MENAFN) Russia will uphold its commitment to a US-brokered ceasefire on energy infrastructure despite repeated Ukrainian attacks, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday. The agreement, mediated by US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin during a recent phone call, was intended to halt strikes on such targets.

According to Russia’s Defense Ministry, Ukraine has launched three attacks in two days, targeting a natural gas storage facility and two segments of the national power grid, causing disruptions in supply. Peskov acknowledged Kiev’s failure to adhere to the agreement but emphasized that Moscow remains committed to the ceasefire.

He also highlighted that Russia has clearly outlined the sites covered by the truce, as discussed in recent consultations in Saudi Arabia. Moscow suspects that Ukraine is deliberately trying to sabotage Washington’s peace efforts by continuing its attacks. The Russian Foreign Ministry had previously warned that continued “provocations” could prompt Moscow to reconsider its participation in the agreement.

The discussions in Riyadh also addressed the potential revival of the Black Sea Grain Initiative, a security framework that previously ensured safe transport to and from Ukrainian ports. Russia withdrew from the agreement in 2023, citing Kiev’s misuse of the corridor for military purposes and the West’s failure to ease sanctions on Russian food and fertilizer exports.

Peskov indicated that Moscow remains open to reactivating the initiative if past commitments to Russia are honored.
