Fishing boat overturns in Indonesia, claiming three lives
(MENAFN) A tragic boating accident in Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara province has claimed the lives of three individuals, with two others still missing, after their fishing boat overturned in the early hours of Thursday.
The incident unfolded at approximately 2:00 a.m. Jakarta time, as the eight-person crew was fishing off the coast of Biboki Anleu sub-district, located within the North Central Timor regency. The sudden onset of severe weather conditions played a pivotal role in the disaster.
"Suddenly, the weather turned extreme with strong winds and high waves. Their boat was struck by the large waves and sank," Muhdar, the head of the operational unit at the provincial search and rescue office, confirmed.
The precarious situation quickly escalated, leaving the fishermen struggling against the turbulent waters. "Three people survived by swimming ashore. One body was recovered in the morning, and two more were found at midday," Muhdar detailed.
Rescue officials have highlighted a critical factor contributing to the fatalities: the absence of essential safety equipment. "There were no life jackets on board, which might have prevented them from being saved. The survivors likely knew how to swim, while the victims may not have," Muhdar clarified.
The ongoing search for the two missing individuals continues, as authorities grapple with the aftermath of the tragic event, underscoring the dangers faced by maritime workers in the region's unpredictable weather conditions.
