Indian businessman`s conglomerate signs agreement with Starlink
(MENAFN) Indian Telecom giant Jio, led by tycoon Mukesh Ambani, has announced a partnership with Elon Musk's SpaceX to bring Starlink internet service to India. This collaboration follows a similar move by Airtel, the country's second-largest telecom operator.
Jio, a part of Ambani’s Reliance Industries conglomerate, said in a statement on Wednesday that it will leverage its extensive data Network to offer Starlink’s broadband services across India, particularly targeting rural and remote areas. The company will also sell Starlink equipment in its stores and provide customer support for installation and activation. However, both companies emphasized that SpaceX must secure the necessary government approvals to operate in India, similar to the regulatory process for satellite phones.
The partnership comes after a prior disagreement between Jio and SpaceX regarding spectrum allocation for satellite services in India. Jio had advocated for an auction-based approach, while the Indian government opted for an administrative allocation, a decision supported by Musk and aligning with global practices.
India, with a population of 1.4 billion, has one of the world’s largest telecom markets, with a subscriber base of 954 million. However, Starlink’s operations have faced controversy. In December, the Indian Army seized Starlink devices during a search operation in Manipur, where local armed groups were reportedly using the service to access the internet amid government-imposed internet restrictions. Musk later denied the claims, clarifying that Starlink’s satellite beams are disabled over India.
