African territory asks for assistance after weaponized group held city

(MENAFN) Ethiopia's Tigray region's interim administration has called on the federal government for assistance after a faction within the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) seized control of two major towns, raising fears of a renewed civil conflict. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the region's communications bureau warned that some senior Tigray army commanders had been plotting a coup since January. The statement highlighted escalating attacks on civilians and the dismantling of government structures, warning that the region could be on the brink of another crisis.

On Tuesday, the TPLF faction claimed to have captured the northern town of Adigrat and the nearby town of Adi-Gudem. Several people were injured when forces tried to seize a government building in Adi-Gudem. In response, Getachew Reda, leader of the interim administration, dismissed three top military commanders and the head of the regional security bureau, accusing them of failing to stop illegal activities and destructive actions.

Tigray’s interim government was established in 2023 as part of the Pretoria Agreement, which ended two years of devastating conflict between Tigray forces and the federal government. The war, which began in 2020, was one of the deadliest conflicts in the world, resulting in over 100,000 casualties. The interim government accused factions within the Tigray military of violating the Pretoria Agreement and undermining the government. The TPLF, in turn, condemned the dismissal of military leaders, accusing the government of betraying national interests and conspiring with external forces.
