Musk amplifies campaign urging Trump to pardon Derek Chauvin

(MENAFN) Elon Musk has amplified a campaign urging US President Donald Trump to pardon Derek Chauvin, the former police officer convicted for the murder of George Floyd, a case that ignited widespread protests across the US in 2020. Chauvin is currently serving a 21-year federal sentence for civil rights violations and over 22 years for second-degree murder after Floyd died in his custody. The incident, captured on video, showed Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck, sparking intense scrutiny and global protests.

On Tuesday, Musk, who serves as a senior adviser to Trump, shared a post from conservative commentator Ben Shapiro on social media advocating for Chauvin’s pardon. Shapiro launched a petition arguing that Chauvin was "unjustly convicted," citing pressure on the jury by movements like Black Lives Matter (BLM) and claiming Floyd’s death was caused by pre-existing health conditions and fentanyl use, not Chauvin’s actions. He also disputed the claim that Chauvin’s knee was on Floyd's neck, referencing the autopsy that showed no tracheal damage.

Shapiro called the conviction a key victory for the "Woke movement" and urged a reversal of what he sees as a politically driven verdict. He stressed the need to correct what he views as a divisive and unjust era in American politics.

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison stated that a pardon from Trump would not free Chauvin, as he is still serving a state sentence, with his expected release date set for December 10, 2035. Chauvin, who survived a stabbing attack in federal prison in November 2023, was later transferred to another facility.
