Iraq Denies Any US Notification Of Ending Iran Gas Waiver
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA))
BAGHDAD, March 8 (KUNA) -- Iraq has not been officially notified by the U.S. of ending waiver for Iranian natural gas imports, but it is preparing for all possibilities, said the country's government spokesman on Saturday.
In a press statement, Bassem Al-Awadi said that Iraq imports 50 million cubic feet of gas from Iran, a quantity that secures the production of one-third of Iraq's electricity needs.
The spokesman underlined that his country would not be able to achieve gas self-sufficiency before 2028.
However, he noted that the Iraqi government is ready for all scenarios in case the waiver is not extended, adding that it could import 30 million cubic feet of gas from Turkmenistan.
A 120-day sanctions waiver, issued by the former US President Joe Biden to allow Iraq to import Iranian gas, expires on March 8.
Iraq is largely dependent on its energy imports from Iran. (end)
