Vance clarifies greatest threat to Europe
(MENAFN) US Vice President J.D. Vance warned that Europe's greatest threat lies within its own borders, rather than from foreign powers like Russia or China. Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Vance expressed concern over the erosion of Europe’s core values and democratic foundations. He highlighted recent political developments, including the annulment of Romania’s presidential election, as signs of deeper problems within the continent. According to Vance, the annulment was politically motivated, reflecting Europe’s fear of dissent and the manipulation of democratic processes when outcomes don’t align with the establishment’s preferences.
Vance also stressed that Europe needs to focus on strengthening its own defense capabilities, especially in light of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. While he acknowledged the importance of reaching a reasonable settlement between Russia and Ukraine, he stated that Europe’s internal challenges, such as the threat of mass migration, should be its top priority. Vance criticized EU leaders for being afraid of their own citizens, particularly in how they handle dissent and opposing viewpoints, labeling it a sign of weakened democratic strength.
Citing examples of rising anti-establishment parties across Europe, Vance noted the case of Romania’s Calin Georgescu, whose presidential campaign was annulled due to allegations of foreign interference. Vance dismissed these claims as unfounded, pointing to the political establishment’s efforts to discredit any opposition, especially those challenging the EU's stance on NATO and Ukraine. He concluded that the EU must confront its internal challenges head-on, or it risks undermining its own democratic integrity.
