Chinese town criticizes fake Russian goods

(MENAFN) Shanghai authorities have launched an investigation into stores selling counterfeit Russian products, following a surge in interest for traditional Russian items in China. The crackdown comes after increasing consumer complaints about the authenticity and quality of goods sold at “Russian goods pavilions.”

Since December 23, the Shanghai Municipal market Supervision Bureau has inspected 47 such pavilions, with six stores under investigation for operating without licenses and engaging in false advertising. The stores, which feature Russian-themed products like Cyrillic-labeled goods, matryoshka dolls, and Russian music, are suspected of selling fake items, including snacks, beverages, cosmetics, and household goods. Many consumers have raised concerns that the goods are actually made in China, not Russia.

As part of the investigation, authorities are inspecting products, collecting samples, and reviewing certifications. Businesses found guilty of selling counterfeit goods could face significant fines or closure. The increased demand for Russian products in China has been fueled by closer trade ties between the two countries and strained relations between Russia and the West.
