Arab League's Dialogue Circle On AI Begins In Cairo

Cairo: The Arab Dialogue Circle on "Artificial Intelligence in the Arab World: Innovative Applications and Ethical Challenges" began at the Arab League headquarters on Sunday.
The two-day event is organized by the Arab Academy for Science, technology and Maritime transport and Naif Arab University for Security Sciences, in cooperation with the General Secretariat of the Arab League as part of the implementation of the resolution of the 56th session of the higher coordination committee for common Arab action in Apr. 2024.
The circle will discuss an array of vital topics related to artificial intelligence, including "Modern Innovations in Artificial Intelligence", "Artificial Intelligence in the Service of Diplomacy and Peacekeeping", and "Ethics of Using Artificial Intelligence.".
In his opening remarks, Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, stated that the intense global race to develop and dominate AI technologies is evident in the declared massive multi-billion investments, attempts to control critical AI technologies, and the widespread buzz surrounding new program launches.
Aboul Gheit added that this race will dominate the scene and continue for a while, but this shouldn't divert the attention from the high risks entangled with this topic, such as leveraging these technologies by organized crimes cartels, with a recent report indicating that 85 percent of cybercrime techniques have utilized the advanced AI technologies.
He noted the potential environmental risks posed by the massive consumption of water and electricity required by firms that develop these technologies, along with the existence of potential massive ethical challenges, thereby requiring all to pay attention when dealing with them, developing the appropriate legislation and taking the essential proactive steps to address them.
