Telegram creator Durov says Chinese education better than West

(MENAFN) Telegram CEO and co-founder Pavel Durov has praised China’s education system, attributing the country’s rapid advancements in artificial intelligence to its rigorous and competitive approach. In a statement on Wednesday, Durov highlighted the fierce academic competition in China, comparing it to the Soviet model, and criticized Western education for minimizing competition to protect students' feelings.

Durov emphasized that while making all students feel like winners may seem kind, it doesn’t reflect the reality of the real world, where achievements are measured through performance and rankings in fields like science, business, and technology. He cited China’s success in mathematics and programming at international Olympiads, noting that China leads the U.S. in gold medals in both the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) and the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI).

Pointing to the success of Chinese AI startup DeepSeek, Durov warned that unless the U.S. education system reforms to promote competition and recognize excellence, China’s technological dominance will continue to grow.
