Arms Surge Deepens Sudan Crisis

(MENAFN- The Rio Times) A surge in foreign weaponry into Sudan is exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis, according to a comprehensive investigation by Amnesty International.
Despite an arms embargo, new weapons from China, Turkey, Russia, and the UAE are still flowing into Sudan. This influx of weapons is fueling intense fighting and civilian suffering.
The conflict, reignited in April 2023 between the Sudanese armed forces (SAF) and Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has claimed over 16,650 lives.
The violence has displaced more than 11 million people within Sudan and pushed millions to the brink of famine.
Amnesty's latest report , grounded in meticulous data from trade records and corroborated by digital evidence, highlights the grim reality of these arms transfers.
They have tracked 1,900 shipments containing handguns, shotguns, rifles, drone jammers, and mortars used in the ongoing conflict.
Many of these weapons, despite being sold as non-lethal, have been converted into functional arms on Sudanese soil.
The Arms Crisis in Sudan
The investigation reveals a chilling detail: some weapons, such as the Tigr rifles and Saiga-MK rifles from Russia 's Kalashnikov Concern, were intended for civilian markets.
In addition, these weapons are ending up in the hands of militant groups.
Similarly, Turkish firms have exported significant quantities of blank guns and hunting shotguns. Military forces in Sudan have modified these weapons for their use
Given these revelations, Amnesty is calling for a comprehensive arms embargo on all of Sudan. They emphasize that the existing restrictions are grossly insufficient.
They argue that without a stricter embargo, the international community continues to fail the Sudanese civilians.
These civilians face not only displacement but also the looming threat of famine. The urgency of this situation is compounded by the dire need for global action.
