Flydubai explores biggest aircraft order amid delivery delays, fleet expansion plans

(MENAFN) Flydubai CEO Ghaith Al Ghaith announced yesterday that the airline is in the preliminary stages of discussions with Boeing and Airbus regarding what is set to be its largest aircraft order to date. Speaking at the Farnborough Airshow, Al Ghaith revealed that the new order will surpass the airline's previous record of 175 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft purchased in 2017.

According to statements, Flydubai is currently evaluating options from both aircraft manufacturers. Al Ghaith emphasized that the upcoming order would "certainly" exceed the size of past purchases, including the 175 aircraft ordered in 2017. The decision will impact the airline's strategy for the next decade, and Al Ghaith noted that both Boeing and Airbus are viable candidates for this substantial order.

The need for a significant new order comes as Flydubai faces challenges with its current fleet. The airline received only four aircraft this year, all of which were delayed. With a total of 251 Boeing 737s ordered and 127 still pending delivery, Flydubai is dealing with significant shortfalls, particularly after Boeing recently informed the carrier that no additional aircraft would be delivered this year. This situation has created a considerable deficit at a time when air travel demand remains robust.

Al Ghaith expressed frustration over the delays, highlighting the airline's growing need to reassess its aircraft procurement strategy. Currently operating an all-Boeing fleet, Flydubai is now contemplating future purchases as it navigates these delivery challenges.
