China records biggest surge in grain production in 9 years this summer

(MENAFN) China has reported its largest increase in grain output in nine years this summer, largely due to an exceptional wheat harvest, according to an official announcement on Wednesday. Han Jun, the Party chief of China's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, revealed that approximately 346 million mu (about 23 million hectares) of wheat were harvested this season. This figure represents an increase of 475,000 mu from the previous year's record high.

The yield per mu of wheat has risen by 10 kilograms, or 2.6 percent year-on-year, marking the most significant growth in the past five years. This achievement underscores China's ongoing commitment to food security, which has been a major focus for the government. Over recent years, various measures have been implemented to boost grain production, including the development of high-standard farmland and the adoption of advanced agricultural technologies.

This summer's grain output reached a new peak of 149.78 million tonnes. For the ninth consecutive year, the total grain output for the year is expected to remain above 650 million tonnes in 2023. Special attention has been given to increasing soybean production, which has led to a nearly 4 percentage point rise in self-sufficiency over the past two years. The supply of a diverse range of farm products, such as meat, fruit, and tea, has also been plentiful.

Despite the progress, some grain-producing regions have faced challenges due to droughts and floods. Han emphasized the importance of swift relief efforts to minimize the effects on the autumn harvest, which constitutes about three-quarters of the annual grain output. To support farmers, technicians and agricultural officials have been dispatched to rural areas to provide targeted assistance and services.
