Sudanese army announces victory over paramilitary Rapid Support Forces in Sennar state

(MENAFN) On Saturday, the Sudanese army announced a significant victory over the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the southeastern state of Sennar. The army's statement revealed that they had captured five combat vehicles and destroyed 16 others during the operation. Local media also reported that Abdurrahman al-Bishi, the RSF’s operation commander in Sennar, was killed in an army airstrike.

The conflict in Sennar has led to a severe humanitarian situation. The International Organization for Migration reported on July 3 that the number of displaced persons in Sennar had surged to 136,130 since June 24. The state has been engulfed in intense battles between the Sudanese army and RSF militia, with both sides vying for control over major cities including Singa, Sennar, El Suki, and Dinder.

The larger conflict in Sudan began in April 2023, sparked by a power struggle between army General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo. The disagreement over integrating the RSF into the national army has led to widespread violence, with nearly 16,000 people reported killed and millions displaced.

In response to the ongoing crisis, Sudan filed a complaint with the UN Security Council on March 29, accusing the United Arab Emirates of supporting the RSF—a charge the UAE has denied. The situation remains dire, with the conflict continuing to exacerbate the humanitarian emergency in the region.
