Switzerland initiates 56 penal proceedings against Russia for violating sanctions

(MENAFN) The Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) announced on Wednesday that it has initiated 56 administrative penal proceedings against Russia for violations of the sanctions imposed following its war in Ukraine. In a statement provided to Anadolu, Fabian Maienfisch, SECO's deputy head of communications and spokesperson, underscored the federal Council's commitment to the "effective and complete implementation of sanctions against Russia."

Maienfisch elaborated that, to date, 41 of these proceedings have been finalized. The outcomes of these finalized proceedings include 26 discontinuation orders, 14 penalty notices, and one penalty order. These measures reflect SECO's rigorous approach to enforcing the sanctions framework, which aims to ensure that the sanctions are upheld comprehensively and that any violations are addressed promptly.

SECO actively investigates any indications of sanctions violations. The agency utilizes various instruments provided under the Embargo Act, such as the duty to provide information and both national and international mutual legal assistance. These tools are essential for SECO in its efforts to prosecute and penalize violations within the scope of administrative criminal proceedings.

Maienfisch noted that SECO follows up on all indications of violations, ensuring that the sanctions regime is not circumvented. However, the secretariat did not provide specific details about the companies or individuals currently under investigation or the nature of the penalties issued. This approach underscores the agency's commitment to confidentiality and the integrity of its investigations.

This announcement comes as part of Switzerland's broader efforts to align with international sanctions and reinforce its stance against actions that undermine global peace and security. The Swiss government's proactive enforcement of these sanctions demonstrates its dedication to upholding international law and supporting efforts to address the consequences of the conflict in Ukraine.
