EU Parliament reiterates support for Ukraine in resolution passed during plenary session
(MENAFN) Amid the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the European Parliament reiterated its steadfast support for Kyiv, committing to continue backing Ukraine until a decisive victory is secured. This was articulated in a resolution passed during the parliament’s plenary session, where 495 MEPs voted in favor, 137 against, and 47 abstained. This resolution represents the newly elected MEPs' first official stance on the conflict, underscoring the significance of Ukraine's independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.
The resolution calls for the EU to sustain and extend sanctions against Russia and Belarus, ensuring strict enforcement to prevent evasion by EU-based companies, third parties, or other nations. MEPs stressed the necessity for Russia to provide financial compensation for the damage caused to Ukraine. They supported the EU’s initiatives to utilize revenues from frozen Russian assets to aid Ukraine’s war efforts and advocated for a robust legal framework to confiscate these assets.
Additionally, the European Parliament commended the outcomes of the recent NATO summit, reinforcing Ukraine's irreversible path to NATO membership. MEPs urged the EU and its member states to enhance military support for Ukraine and called on the European Commission to propose long-term financial assistance for Ukraine’s reconstruction through the newly established Ukraine Facility.
In a strong condemnation, the Parliament denounced Russia’s missile attack on the Okhmatdyt children’s hospital in Kyiv and criticized Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's recent visit to Russia. The resolution labeled his actions as a "blatant violation of EU treaties and common foreign policy," suggesting that Hungary should face repercussions.
