Trump claims that he`s not fond of ‘sanctions’

(MENAFN) United States presidential candidate Donald trump has voiced doubts about the effectiveness of sanctions, yet he avoided directly addressing whether he would consider lifting restrictions on Russia as part of a strategy to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. In an interview with Bloomberg, recorded on June 25 and released recently, Trump acknowledged the potential downsides of sanctions, stating, “So what we’re doing with sanctions is we’re forcing everyone away from us. I don’t love sanctions.” He mentioned that while he found sanctions useful in dealing with Iran, he believed they were not strictly necessary in that case and implied a similar stance toward Russia.

Trump highlighted his past positive relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin, asserting that their rapport prevented the threat of war and would have deterred Putin from invading Ukraine during his presidency. However, he did not clarify if his proposed solution to the conflict would entail lifting existing sanctions against Moscow.

Despite his skepticism about sanctions, Trump maintained the Obama-era restrictions on Russia during his presidency, particularly concerning Crimea, and imposed additional measures to hinder the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project aimed at supplying the European Union. Trump also initiated a significant tariff battle with China, which he lauded as a success while criticizing current President Joe Biden for allegedly fostering closer ties between Russia and China.

As the geopolitical landscape evolves, Trump's views on sanctions and international relations will likely play a crucial role in shaping his campaign and potential policies should he return to office.
