UAE mediates prisoner exchange between Russia, Ukraine

(MENAFN) Russia and Ukraine are set to initiate a significant prisoner exchange, involving the release of 90 prisoners of war. The deal, brokered with the assistance of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), is scheduled to take place on Wednesday. Ukrainian media had earlier indicated plans for a substantial exchange facilitated by the UAE.

According to Ukrainian parliament's human rights commissioner, Dmytro Lubinets, the government has been coordinating efforts with the UAE to facilitate what he described as a "large-scale" prisoner swap with Russia. This forthcoming exchange is part of ongoing efforts between the two countries amidst the 27-month-long conflict.

Previous exchanges between Russia and Ukraine have seen each side releasing 90 prisoners, with the most recent swap occurring in June last year, also mediated by the UAE. Such initiatives reflect sporadic attempts to ease tensions and address humanitarian concerns amid the protracted conflict between the two nations.
