Brazil Boosts Defense With Israeli Missiles Amid Border Tensions

(MENAFN- The Rio Times) Amid mounting regional tensions, Brazil has upgraded its military arsenal by acquiring Israeli Spike LR2 missiles.

Transported from Tel Aviv to Rio de Janeiro, these advanced weapons arrived via a KC-390 military aircraft, signaling Brazil's proactive stance on national defense.

This strategic military enhancement coincides with escalating border disputes involving Venezuela and Guiana, fueled by the aggressive postures of Venezuela 's authoritarian leader, Nicolás Maduro.

The 2021 deal faced delays due to Russia's conflict in Ukraine and Middle East tensions. The shipment includes not only missiles but also ten launchers and simulators.

This hardware aims to boost Brazil's deterrence capabilities, especially in Roraima, a state marked by its strategic importance.

Concurrently, Brazil has invested in 36 self-propelled howitzers, further solidifying its commitment to robust defense mechanisms.

In São Paulo, the Brazilian Army is setting up a specialized anti-tank unit within the 11th Mechanized Infantry Brigade.

Equipped to operate nationwide, this brigade has recently conducted tests with a new missile system, emphasizing its readiness and operational flexibility.

Originally, plans called for distributing these missiles throughout Rio Grande do Sul . However, due to equipment shortages and heightened instability in the north, the focus has shifted.

Over the next three years, Brazil plans to inject up to R$2.5 billion ($460 million) into its armored forces.

This investment reflects the urgency of fortifying its military assets in response to potential conflicts and the impending Venezuelan elections.

This decisive move by Brazil underscores the nation's strategic military planning amidst a complex geopolitical landscape.

It highlights Brazil's efforts to maintain sovereignty and peace within its borders and the broader South American region.
