Algeria reaches new record for electricity consumption amid severe heat wave

(MENAFN) Algeria has experienced an unprecedented surge in electricity demand, setting a new historical peak on Sunday amidst a severe heat wave that pushed temperatures beyond 50 degrees Celsius, particularly in the southern regions. According to a statement from Sonelgaz, the state-owned electricity and gas company, electricity consumption across the country peaked at 18,732 megawatts at 14:45 local time (13:45 GMT).

Despite the record local demand, Sonelgaz maintained consistent levels of electricity exports to Tunisia, although specific export quantities were not disclosed. The surge in consumption underscores the challenges posed by extreme weather conditions, with Algeria's Meteorological Department issuing a red alert due to the intense heat wave affecting the southern desert states.

Algeria currently boasts an electricity production capacity exceeding 24,000 megawatts, according to official data from the Ministry of Energy. Authorities have indicated the potential to export surplus electricity to neighboring countries, including European nations, in the coming years.

The nation heavily relies on gas as the primary source for electricity production, making it the largest gas producer in Africa. Looking ahead, Algeria aims to significantly expand its clean energy sector, particularly solar energy, with a target to achieve 15,000 megawatts of electricity production from renewable sources by 2030. This ambitious goal aligns with Algeria's strategic efforts to diversify its energy mix and enhance energy sustainability amidst growing domestic and international demand.
