Turkey conducts negotiations with Syria, commits to fostering peace in region

(MENAFN) Negotiations between Syria and Türkiye have been conducted at various levels in the past, and Turkey remains committed to fostering peace in the region, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated on Sunday. Speaking at a joint news conference in Istanbul alongside Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, who is on a visit to Türkiye, Fidan emphasized that the region is entering a phase focused on peace and stability. He noted, “The spirit of the times compels us to seek peace and stability.”

Fidan pointed out that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has always kept the door open for dialogue, whether directly or indirectly. He stressed the importance of dialogue channels with Syria, which have been initiated in various formats since 2017, and expressed hope that these efforts would yield positive results. He described Erdogan’s call for peace in neighboring Syria as significant and urged that it be taken seriously.

He acknowledged the complexities of the current situation in Syria, stating that addressing the issues will require considerable time, even to begin discussions. Fidan underscored that Türkiye takes into account not only its own needs but also the political independence and territorial integrity of Syria.

Furthermore, he highlighted the necessity of establishing a national dialogue mechanism in line with the principles of UN Security Council Resolution 2254 and pursuing solutions that have the support of the international community. Responding to claims that Türkiye's position on the Syrian opposition has shifted, Fidan firmly denied this, affirming that Ankara’s stance remains unchanged. He reiterated that Türkiye has been actively supporting the Syrian opposition in their fight against terrorist groups for many years.
