Turkey declares no NATO-Israel cooperation till peace achieved in Palestine

(MENAFN) Turkey has firmly stated that it will not endorse any cooperation between Israel and NATO as long as Israel continues its military operations in Gaza. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan made this declaration following the NATO summit in Washington, criticizing Israel for violating the core values of the United States-led military alliance.

Erdogan emphasized that any attempts at collaboration with Israel within NATO will remain off the table until a comprehensive and sustainable peace is established in Palestine. He condemned Israel's actions in Gaza as "atrocities," asserting that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has jeopardized not only the safety of its own citizens but also the stability of the broader region through its "expansionist and reckless policies."

The president called on Türkiye's allies to exert more pressure on the Netanyahu administration, urging for a cease-fire and the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza, who have faced dire conditions for the past nine months.

This statement comes in light of recent claims from independent United Nations human rights experts, who accused Israel of conducting an "intentional and targeted starvation campaign" against the Palestinian population. They pointed to a rising death toll from malnutrition among children in Gaza, indicating that the enclave is experiencing a situation akin to famine, although the United Nations has not officially classified it as such.

In response to these allegations, the Israeli mission to the United Nations in Geneva condemned the report, accusing its authors of disseminating "misinformation" and "supporting Hamas propaganda."

As Israel maintains relations with the United States as a major non-NATO ally, Erdogan's stance represents a significant diplomatic challenge within the context of NATO's ongoing discussions and regional dynamics. The Turkish government’s position highlights the contentious nature of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and its implications for international cooperation moving forward.
