Russia expresses readiness to invest in Iran’s northern port
(MENAFN) A group of Russian entrepreneurs visited Amirabad Port in Iran's northern Mazandaran province on Saturday to explore investment opportunities in the production of oil products. Mohammad-Ali Musapour-Gorji, the Director General of Amirabad Maritime and Ports Department, highlighted that a Russian company expressed readiness to invest in the port, recognizing its strategic location and potential in various investment fields.
Musapour-Gorji emphasized that attracting foreign investment in ports is a key goal for the Iranian government, aligning with efforts to develop a sea-oriented economy. This initiative not only aims to generate income but also significantly contributes to technology transfer and job creation within the region. He called on both domestic and international investors to present plans for maritime and port activities to capitalize on the capabilities of Amirabad Port.
Currently, Amirabad Port operates at only 30 percent of its capacity, located on the eastern shore of the Caspian Sea. The port is seen as having substantial potential for growth. In mid-June, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak noted a remarkable 48 percent increase in trade volume between Russia and Iran during the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same period the previous year. Novak reported that Russia's exports to Iran surged by 77 percent, while imports from Iran rose by 13 percent, underscoring the strengthening economic ties.
Additionally, Novak mentioned the recent launch of direct flights between Grozny and Tehran, operated by Iran's Mahan Air, which is expected to boost tourism between Iran and the North Caucasus. He expressed confidence that these developments would facilitate increased tourism and economic interaction between the regions. Overall, the value of Iran's exports to Russia saw a 26 percent increase in the last Iranian calendar year, further indicating a growing bilateral relationship.
